Happy Birthday John

John Sharpe is a minneapolis wedding photographer

Today is John’s 29th birthday. I can’t believe he only has one more year in his twenties! I could say he is getting old but that would make me old as well so I won’t go that far.  John is the most thoughtful, loving person, and I’m lucky to have him as my better half. He loves photography and loves all the people he gets to work with, and I’m so happy he finally able to do it full time.

John, I love you. Thank you for all your support and help while I’m trying to survive my first year of residency. Thank you for being patient when I am sleep deprived and post-call. Thank you for just holding me a few weeks ago when I had my 15 minute episode of insanity where I cycled from crying to laughing and back and forth. Thank you for making me a better person, a better wife, and a better physician.

I love you MORE!!

Please take a minute and wish John a happy birthday below!

Alphabet Project – Need just a little Help (about 30 seconds)

Hello Eveyone,

Last week, I attended Kevin Kubota’s mini-boot camp here in Minneapolis.  During the workshop, Kevin offered a challenge to the 200+ photographers in attendance.  He gave a challenge to do an alphabet shoot. Basically, this shoot involves going out and finding every shape in the alphabet in an abstract form.  So last week, I went out and took this little challenge in downtown St Paul.  It was kind of fun!

Now, here is where I could really use your help…Kevin has been gracious enough to round up about $1000 in prizes to the best alphabet project. I would be happy to win some of this stuff  ;) There have been 17 entries for this contest (my odds are relatively good).  All I need you to do is to go here and vote on entry 15 of 17 (that’s mine).  There is no sign-up, you just need to click the green  thumbs up for my entry…that’s it and your vote is counted.

Instructions:

1. Go to http://kevinkubota.smugmug.com/Photography/Alphabet-Contest-TCPPA/13854096_D9e4w#1015732422_z4nm4

2. Click on entry 15 of 17 (that’s mine), hover your mouse  to the right on the big version of my entry and click the green “thumbs up”.

3. That’s it…and Thank You

Here is my entry in a little bit more detail…fun project…give it try and it will change the way you look at things!Alphabet

Our Italy Trip – Burano, Italy

John and I went to Italy in June to celebrate graduation. We have talked for years about visiting Italy after graduation but never really made any plans. As graduation approached we actually discussed visiting Russia, since this is where John served his mission. However, as the time to travel came closer we still hadn’t secured our visas or made any travel plans. So last minute we changed our minds and decided to go to Italy instead. We bought our plane tickets about 3 weeks before we left. One of my med school friends went to Italy and Croatia before graduation and we used her Italy itinerary as a guide for our trip. We flew into Rome and spent 3 days there. Then we took a train to Florence and spent 2 days shopping and discovering that beautiful city. Then we took another train and went to Cinque Terre which was probably my favorite stop on the trip (more about this later). Then we ended our vacation in Venice.

During our layover at JFK, John sat next to an older gentleman who had a very nice Nikon camera. He started chatting with his and discovered he was talking to photographer icon Jay Maisel.  Jay is no small name in the photography industry…he has been shooting for over 50 years and has been named a “master of light” and one of the “30 most influential photographers of the decade”.  You can imagine that John was in heaven!!! During their conversation he asked where we were going in Italy. John mentioned Venice and he told us about Burano. He stated it was one of his favorite places in the world to photograph. Our last day in Italy was spent in Burano which was a couple hours away from Venice by boat. It is absolutely beautiful. It is definitely the most colorful place we have ever been. I like how John describes it: “It was like walking around in a box of crayons.

Here are a few pics from Burano. To see the rest, visit John’s blog post about it here: http://blog.johnsharpephotography.com/2010/07/burano-italy-travel-photography/

I absolutely loved this little island town and highly recommend visiting it if you are ever in Venice. John posted more pics of Burano on his photography blog here: http://blog.johnsharpephotography.com/2010/07/burano-italy-travel-photography/

More Italy fun to come…
